Super Melodic Tracks: Psychedelic Cowboy by John DePatie

I got this really nice review yesterday.    My blog has been severely neglected for a long time so I thought re-posting this would be a great way to get back into it.

Super Melodic Tracks: Psychedelic Cowboy by John DePatie: Psychedelic Cowboy by John DePatie I was very excited by this submission because John DePatie is a professional guitar player, a "side...

Baked Potato 40th Anniversary, Cathouse Thursday CDs and Radio Performance

I'm now less than two weeks past one of the most exciting shows that I've ever played. The Baked Potato 40th Anniversary Jazzfest took place May 22 and 23 at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre. I had a chance to perform on the same bill with many of my idols!

I came to California to study with Scott Henderson back in '92, and he performed on the 22nd, as did Steve Lukather, Michael Landau and Allan Holdsworth who are all favorites of mine. I performed with Don Randi and Quest on the 23rd. Don is a dear friend, and also one of my absolute favorite keyboard players. He was amazing! We also had Tom Brechtlein on drums, H Chris Roy on bass, Gary Gardner and Pete Korpela on percussion and Chuck Camper on Sax. Also on the bill that day were Lee Ritenour, The Yellowjackets, The Jazz Ministry, and Larry Carlton, another personal favorite.

I stayed for nearly the entire show on both days and heard lots of incredible music. The memories are among my most professionally gratifying. I felt like a kid, hanging around watching the shows from the side of the stage with so many great musicians. At one point I can remember Michael Landau, Kirk Fletcher, Vinnie Colaiuta, Abraham Laboriel, and Tal Wilkenfeld all standing in the same small area as me, watching and listening to Larry Carlton. And I'll never forget the feeling of looking over to the side of the stage before we started playing and seeing Steve Lukather. Then halfway through our set I saw Michael Landau off to the side...and seemingly listening. Yikes, that was exciting and terrifying all at once!

Some nice people from the Gear Page posted some pictures of me on pages 4+5 of this thread. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=724253&page=4 I can also be seen in the background of some of the pictures on the first page...haha.

In other news, the band Cathouse Thursday ,which I've been playing with for quite some time has nearly completed not 1, but 2 CDs. The band performs material by my longtime associate Will Faeber , who sings and usually plays keyboards. We also do some jam band style classic rock and r+b covers. The group also features the talents of Aaron Bagley and Jody Bagley. One CD is titled 'Til Death Do Us Party and the other one Nashville Baby. Aaron is just finishing the mixes, and the artwork is being finalized and I expect them to be ready by the end of June.

Will, Aaron, and I did a special performance on the radio yesterday to begin the promotion. The station is called www.adrenalineradio.com and the show was called Makin' It With Guil And Alesha. I believe the podcast will be archived, but it also went live over am! They played the track "Sookie" and then we performed "Make A Little Heaven" in the studio. Will played acoustic and sang, I played my Regal resonator, and Aaron sang backups. I think it's the first time we've ever performed in that configuration.

Finally

I can't let the whole year go by without a blog post...

It's been a busy week...gigs, sessions and a video performance/interview. I was asked to do Chris Cooke's Acoustic Lounge. The show consists of a short interview followed by a live performance of me doing a couple of my tunes.

The first, "Song For Carlos", is a tribute to Carlos Santana. We debuted it live in October with the group Carlos The Tribute and we'll be in the studio recording it early in 2010. I did it with my scratch backing track on electric. I used my Blueshawk into Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3.

The second tune was "Toshi's Favorite", which is an older tune of mine. I've never performed it on acoustic before and I decided to use my Takamine 12-string so that I'd have at least something acoustic on the "Acoustic Lounge." I asked Chris, who is an excellent drummer, if he could do something to accompany me and said he could get a good bass drum sound by banging on the back of an acoustic guitar.

Tales of the bald...

I've just discovered that I've been included in the Gallery Of Shaved Head Musicians. http://www.takeitfromthehead.com/index.html
I'm not sure who submitted me but it's quite an honor to be included with the other 1000+ and counting shiny domes out there in music land!

In other news January has been a surprisingly busy month playing around town and has left little time for writing or production. I'm hoping to get into some writing over the next couple of months as things slow down. I've got a new idea for a group and I need some new tunes to play. I'm really looking forward to getting out and doing some of my tunes again!

One more Will Rize session

We did another session last night, what turned out to be our fourth of five, I think. It was a late one but it was a lot of fun. The tracks have been coming out great. We've been working at Sound Best Studio in Garden Grove. It's a nice studio. We've had Mike Best and Patrick Clancy engineering. I love it when the drums are all set up and dialed in...it makes it so easy to get up and running.

Podcast

The podcast that I did with Beth Hirsch in New York is now available for download. You can hear us perform live in the studio as a duo on acoustic guitars. Beth is a great singer with some great tunes and we had a great time doing this.

Man it's hot!!

The weather man says it's 106 in Hollywood now. It sure feels like it. It's a lazy, sticky day...good time for a blog update.

The Rae Indigo session last Friday went really well. My old pal Darren Ross was on drums, Andre Collins was on keys and Keith Barrows produced and played bass. We tracked at the Jungle Room in Glendale. We got four tunes done. Two of them had song forms in the computer for us to play to and the other two we arranged on the spot. I think the stuff came out great.

This week I've got a session with Will Rivera on Wednesday. This will be the third (of 3, I think) session that we've done for this project. He's got a great lineup of people and I know it's gonna be funky.
